Human population growth and rapid development in Malaysia have caused rising demand for power supply. To meet the demand and consumption, hydropower is one of the alternative energy sources, due to our suitable climate and topography. Development of a hydroelectric dam, however, could cause severe damage or destruction to natural habitats and their components, including herpetofauna. The Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric Project (HTHEP) is one of the hydroelectric dam projects in Peninsular Malaysia to extend the capacity of the existing Kenyir dam. This book discusses the amphibians and reptilians found within the HTHEP area with focus on the hydroelectric dams’ effects on natural habitats and wildlife, the ecological roles of amphibians and reptilians and their decline, herpetofauna sampling techniques and sample analysis, and records of herpetofauna found in HTHEP with the taxonomic relationship between them. Information regarding changes in species composition resulted from the dam project could portray the effects of hydroelectric dam development on amphibians and reptilians, therefore assist conservation efforts and future dam development projects.
